Halde Cemetery Page – Part III: Church and Burial Records

When someone online asked about Halde Cemetery in Waterville, Kennebec, Maine, my interest was piqued. I had never heard of said cemetery and couldn’t readily find much about it. I started digging and found a defunct website regarding the cemetery. The last updates to the site seem to be dated in 1997. The site can currently only be accessed using archive.org’s WayBackMachine — this means that it is only a matter of time before it is inaccessible. I have been working to retrieve as much information as possible from the site.

The below information I took directly from the image capture from the site’s church and burial record page. My goal is to eventually table this information for easier reading and use. All information within this page is the direct work of Robert Chenard and those who have worked tirelessly to preserve the Halde Cemetery. TMR, 23 Nov 2021

 IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY PARISH
Fairfield, MaineDeaths recorded in Immaculate Heart of Mary’s first parish register begin on January 23, 1891 and end July 8, 1914. Essentially all those who died before 1899 listed in this register are buried at the Halde Cemetery. Those who have a “*” following their name are known to be buried at the Halde Cemetery by virtue of a gravestone located on a lot there. These are already listed in the Part I of the Halde Cemetery inventory. There likely are other persons buried here who died after 1898 listed in this parish death register but cannot be certain which ones they are because of the absence of any gravemarker.ABREVIATIONS

ST. FRANCIS DE SALES PARISH, WATERVILLE
Record of Interments at Halde Cemetery
1891-1898

St. Francis de Sales death and burial records started to be kept in January 1891. Burials were generally referred to as at the “Catholic Cemetery”  from 1891 to 1911, at “St.Francis de Sales Cemetery” from 1911 to 1912, and at “Calvary Cemetery” from 1912 to 1915, and back to the “Catholic Cemetery” or “RC Cemetery” from 1915. All of these various names generally refer to the same Cemetery, namely, the St.Francis de Sales Cemetery on Grove Street in Waterville. All of the pre-1898 burials were at the Halde Cemetery since that was also referred to as the “Catholic Cemetery.”

The first local burials of Catholics in Waterville were in the early town cemetery – presently known as Memorial Park or Coburn Park on Elm Street located  between the First Baptist church and Elm Towers.  In 1851, those buried there along with any gravestones were transferred to the “new”  Pine Grove cemetery. In 1872, St. Francis  de Sales Parish purchased about 6 acres of land on College Avenue near the Fairfield line as a Catholic cemetery. The first burials there were in 1873. Between the years 1851 and 1873, Catholics were either buried at Pine Grove Cemetery or at some other cemetery – some being returned to Canada according to a few records. A fairly large section of Pine Grove cemetery has only French names on the grave markers which leads us to believe that this section of that cemetery was reserved for the Catholics. On June 1, 1898, the first plot of land (almost 10 acres)  for a new Catholic cemetery was purchased by St.. Francis de Sales Parish (under the name of the Bishop of Portland)  and was formally dedicated by Bishop Healy on October 14, 1899. There are numerous gravestones now at this new cemetery which pre-date the opening of this cemetery. By virtue of the death dates as well as the type/style of gravestone, that these were obviously  first located at the Halde Cemetery. Relatives of these deceased evidently removed those gravestones from the old cemetery and placed them on their newly purchased lots at the St. Francis cemetery. This would account for the fact that the ground under which these old gravestones are located does not appear to have ever been disturbed and the fact that there are many depressions in the ground at the Halde cemetery  which have no gravestone markers. Thus, the gravestones are at the new cemetery but the remains of the deceased are actually at the old cemetery in most, if not all, of these cases. The Halde cemetery, therefore, has upwards of 625 graves and the St. Francis cemetery presently has approximately 14,000 graves.

The first person buried in the “new” St.Francis Cemetery was Alfred Trial, 10-year-old son of David Trial and Octavie Boissonnault. Although this is not specifically stated in the Death Register, it is the first entry on a new page (10) which states the cemetery as “St.Francis de Sales. The next entry is for Annie Fecteau (d. 6 Sep 1898, buried 7 Sep 1898)  with a “ditto” under St.Francis de Sales Cemetery. The next entry is for M.-Emélie Poulin (d. 8 Sep 1898, buried  9 Sep 1898)  and states burial was at the “Old Cemetery.”  The fourth person has a “ditto” under the Old Cemetery, followed by a fifth which again states burial in the St.Francis de Sales cemetery. Thus, these are certain indicators for the break between burials in the Halde Cemetery and burials in the St.Francis Cemetery.

The first date is the day the person died, a slash “/” and then the date (day, month, year) of the funeral. If the date of death and the date of the funeral/burial are in two different months, the only difference from the format will be that the month died is also included in the first date listed. First example: 21/26-1-1891 means that person died on 21 Jan 1891 and the funeral/burial took place on 26 Jan 1891. Second example: 28-9/1-10-1911 means that person died on 28 Sep 1911 and the funeral/burial took place on 1 Oct 1911. Third example: 29-12/2-1-1902 means that person died on 29 Dec 1901 and the funeral/burial was on 2 Jan
1902. CAUTION:  women’s last names are sometimes their husband’s and not their maiden names. Married women are listed, as much as possible, under their maiden names in this listing.
Some of the early records give place died rather than place born. These will have a “d.” in front of the place died, e.g. “d. Wtvl.” – died in Waterville.

ABBREVIATIONS & NOTES for age: y = years, m = months, w = weeks, d = days, h = hours
for relationship to deceased: c/o = child of, h/o husband of, w/o = wife of, dau. = daughter
for disease/cause of death: acc. = accident/ly, c = cancer, cons. = consumption (today known as TB),
d = disease, f = fever, grippe (today known as the flu),  infl. = inflamation of,
 k = killed by, OD = overdose of, p = paralysis, t = trouble, wc = whooping cough

NOTE 1: gravestone located at Halde Cemetery
NOTE 2: gravestone located at St. Francis Cemetery
NOTE 3: Italics , *, and # notes are mine. Asterisks “*” denote information from the register.
Unfortunately, the notes in Italics only appear as such in the published hard copy and not in this HTML file.
NOTE 4: Only 9 of the 300 persons listed below are already in PART I of this inventory. They are repeated here to indicate that they appear in the St. Francis de Sales Death Register and that their funeral service was observed at that church. There is no doubt that these 300 individuals were buried at the Halde Cemetery. It can safely be assumed that there are many others.
A stillborn and nameless child in French is usually called “Anonyme”
